Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Richmond VA
Posted on: Friday, March 15th, 2019Are you going to be in Richmond around St. Patrick’s Day? For those who are, despite this holiday falling on Sunday this year, there are going to be tons of things happening throughout the Richmond area in honor of this day!
A Little History
Despite what many people think, St. Patrick’s Day is not just a day to wear green and have a beer or two. And it is not the day that celebrates how Patrick was able to banish snakes from the island…there weren’t any snakes in Ireland to begin with! St. Patrick’s Day celebrates the coming of Christianity to the Irish people. Patrick brought the religion to the people and for that he was always honored.
So, why do we wear green? This goes back to the Irish Rebellion in which Irish soldiers would wear green as they fought off the British. So, we wear green on St. Patrick’s Day as a sign of solidarity. So, shake out your green and get ready for some of the events taking place in Richmond this year!
