A Brief History of Richmond VA
The first English explorers that came, to what we now know as Richmond, were in 1607, and they were led by Captain Christopher Newport. During this time, the Powhatan Confederacy was the main tribe who called this area home. After two unsuccessful attempts, it wasn’t until 1644 that the English were able to finally settle in this area.
Once the construction of Fort Charles started, new settlers arrived in the area by the dozens. The area immediately became known as a bursting trade location that dealt with furs, hides and tobacco. However, this area still wasn’t known as “Richmond”.
The area became known as Richmond in 1737, which is the date the city celebrates today. It was founded by Colonel William Byrd II. However, it wasn’t until 1742 that this area became a town. Only 250 people lived in Richmond at the time of the town’s founding!
Richmond saw a boost in its appeal when the State Capitol was temporary moved here in 1780 and again when the British surrendered at Yorktown in 1782. Richmond became an incorporated city and was designated as the state’s capital.
